Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SSATTB

[S I]-G2; [S II]-G2; [A]-C2; [T I]-C3; [T II]-C3; [B]-F3. High clefs. Entire range, A-a’. No evidence of chant. Within a primarily homorhythmic fabric textual phrases are delineated through contrasting rhythmic gestures and voice groupings, as well as cadential treatment. Gatto’s overall structure combines verses 1 and 2 in a full voice setting, verses 3 and 4 with brief antiphonal treatment of “suspiramus,” and verse 5, the centerpiece, in contrasting four-voice groups (“Eia ergo,” four lower voices; “advocata nostra,” four upper voices; and “illos tuos misericordes oculos ad nos converte,” four lower voices); a brief silence precedes verse 6 (“Et Jesum…”), introduced by four upper voices. The final 3 verses display an expressive setting of the acclamations through pitch inflection (a, b♭, a) in long note values, harmonic progressions and imitative density. Declamatory text setting defined by syllabic style. Final a.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
