[1] Vita dulcedo

Polyphonic ensemble SSATTB

C I-G2; C II-G2; A-C2; T I-C3; T II-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Alternatim setting. Equal Cantus voices (d’-g’’). Equal Tenor voices (e-a’). Within an imitative texture a slightly paraphrased “Vita” motto (C I, C II, & T I, mm. 1-9), coupled with a disjunct countersubject (A, T II & B) introduces pars 1. The initial motive associated with “Ad te” (T II, C I, A, & C II of 2.p.) alludes to the appropriate chant (App. 4); however, an obvious plainsong quotation in long-note values appears with “in hac lachrymarum” (C II & C I, mm. 51-7). A 14-measure closed section devoted to the phrase “Et Jesum” suggests the significance of the text. Quotations of the “Et Jesum” motive are normally assigned to the B or an inner voice; cast as longae and placed in C I, Gallet’s “Et Jesum” motive is supported by a web of motivic material. The initial plainsong pitches concurrent with “benedictum” permeate the imitative texture; in addition, the word, “nobis” in semibreves, stands apart (C I & B, mm. 92-6). Chant is basic to the motivic material of “O pia.” Development techniques define partes 1, 2 & 4. Gallet’s Salve regina is one of the most substantial alternatim settings. Final g, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
