[Tp]-C1; [A]-C3; [T]-C4; [B]-F4. Alternatim setting. A variant[1] of the Spanish version of Salve regina serves as a reservoir of motives and cantus firmus treatment. Anticipatory statements (Tp, A, B) of “vita” (“salve” motto) introduce cantus firmus (T) primarily in semibreves (mm. 8-14). Chant accompanying “spes nostra” as minums pervades the contrapuntal texture for the remainder of 1.p. (mm. 14-35). Motives with initial pitches derived from chant are associated with “ad te” “suspiramus,” “gementes” and “et fluentes” of 2.p.; for the concluding text, “in hac lacrimarum vale,” (mm. 64-79) a cantus firmus in breves and semibreves (B) supports motivic material whose initial interval of a fourth duplicates the chant concurrent with “in hac.” In 4.p. Franco employs chant as cantus firmus with “O dulcis” (Tp, mm. 122-9) and “virgo semper Maria” (A, mm. 142-61) coupled with freely composed motives that permeate the imitative fabric. A declamatory text setting prevails. Final d.

Franco most likely used the Psalterium, An[t]iphonarium Sanctorale (Mexico City: Pedro Ochate, 1584) or a closely related source; however, chant associated with “virgo semper Maria” reflects a Spanish chant version in Passionarium Toletanum (Alcalà de Henares: Arnoldo Guillén de Brocar, 1515). On the other hand, chant concurrent with textual phrases “gementes et flentes” and “O dulcis” may reflect a local practice. For transcription of Salve regina chant, see MRM 9, pp. 70-2.
