[1] Vita dulcedo

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

[C]-C1; [A]-C3; [T]-C4; [B]-F4. Alternatim setting. Chant (App. 4) significantly influences the formal structure of De Vourda’s Salve regina. The “vita” (“salve”) motto, cast in longae, is supported by a two-measure motive that is tossed about (T, A, B, T) within a minimalist texture; a similar design informs pars 4 wherein chant serves as a cantus firmus in consistent breves (C). The chant-based “et spes nostra” (mm. 22-31) in pars 1 consists of a rising stepwise sequence of the three upper voices; the B is silent. Like pars 1, chant associated with “suspiramus” in pars 2 appears in longae but also in canon between T and C at the upper octave and distance of 4 breves (mm. 42-52). The final phrase “in hac lachrimarum valle” stated first at pitch and then a fourth lower serves as a cantus firmus in consistent semibreves (mm. 65-80). The “Et Jesum” motive frequently appears in a voice within a homorhythmic texture; De Vourda’s “Et Jesum” motive is in long-note values, but within an imitative texture with entries: B, A, T, C. Chant associated with phrases “benedictum…” and “nobis…” permeates the imitative texture of the only pars in triple mensuration. Rhythmically active segments precede final cadences of all partes. Text underlay is of minimal concern. Final d (1.p., 2.p., 3.p.), a (4.p.).

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
