Polyphonic ensemble SSATBX

Tb I-G2; Tb II-G2; M-C2; Ct-C4; T-C5; B-F4. Entire range, F-g’’. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases are distinguished through mensuration, harmonic goals and particularly alternation of duo or trio sections with five and six full-voice segments. Within the florid style of the antiphon, the duos and trios, most likely assigned to soloists, are characterized by rapid rhythmic gestures that set them apart from the full-voice material. The third section includes verses 3 and 4 scored for three lower voices (Ct, T, B), verse 5 for five voices (Tb, M, Ct, T, B) and, interestingly, “Et Jesum,” the initial words of verse 6. Virgo mater trope verses[1] not only entail remarkably elaborate melodic lines but equally unusual vocal combinations: verse 1 (Tb I, Tb II, Ct); verse 2 (Ct, T, B); and verse 3, lines 1-3 (Tb and B) and line 4 (Tb, T-B), voice groups that result in wide spacing between Tb and lower voice(s). Brief imitative passages introduce “mater misericordiae” (mm. 5-9), “aeterna porta” (mm. 73-5) and “Virgo clemens” (mm. 96-104). Triple mensuration defines music prior to the trope and the final invocation “O dulcis Maria, salve”; the trope verses and first two invocations are in duple mensuration. Final g, b♭ signature in B throughout antiphon and M, Ct, and T in selected sections; no signature in Tb.

1. Virgo mater ecclesiae, / Virgin mother of the church
aeterna porta gloriae, / eternal gate to glory,
esto nobis refugium / be a refuge for us
apud Patrem et Filium. / before the Father and the Son,

O clemens! / O gentle one;

Virgo clemens, virgo pia, / Gentle virgin, virgin holy,
virgo dulcis, O Maria, / O sweet virgin Mary,
exaudi preces omnium / hear the prayers of all
ad te pie clamantium. / Who make their dutiful cry to you,

O pia! / O loving one;

Funde preces tuo nato / Pour out your prayers to your Son,
crucifixo, vulnerato, / crucified, wounded,
et pro nobis flagellato / and scourged for our sake,
spinis puncto, felle potato, / pierced with thorns, given gall to drink.

O dulcis Maria, salve. / O sweet Mary, hail!

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
