Within a homophonic texture Clavius articulates specific textual passages by reducing the number of voices. Verse 1 (m. 1-7) consists of four upper voices, whereas the initial text of verses 3 (“ad te clamamus”) and 4 (“ad te suspiramus”) are, respectively, reduced to 4 (S, A, T II, B, mm. 15-6) and 3 voices (A, T II, T II, mm. 22-4) followed by a statement of the latter text for four voices (S, A, T II, B, mm. 22-5). The concluding text of verse 2, “et spes nostra salve,” is scored for A, T I and T II (mm. 13-5). Almost four-fifths of the remainder of the antiphon is full voiced. Similar rhythmic gestures shared by all voices complement verses 1 and 2: breve, two semibreves, breve, primarily followed by minums. The word “mater” is omitted in verse 1. Presence of fourths and fifths in B accompanied by harmonic language suggests tonal implications. Declamatory text setting prevails. Final d, inclusion of b-flats in MS; editorial b-flats, c and f sharps necessary.
