[C]-C2; Ct-C4; T-C4; B-F4. Except for initial “salve” motive (in semibreves) that permeates the imitative texture, chant (App. 4) is delegated to C in 1.p. For the 2.p. verse five, chant appears in Ct with imitative entry in B; thereafter the T takes up the chant until “et Jesum” where it is assigned to B as breves within a homorhythmic texture. Invertible counterpoint introduces “benedictum” (A/C and T/B) with chant at its core; for the remainder of the antiphon chant pervades the imitative, contrapuntal texture. The word “mater” is omitted in verse one and “semper” (“virgo semper Maria”) is inserted in verse nine. A combination of syllabic and melismatic styles defines the text setting. Final d, a limited number of b-flats are included in the manuscripts; editorial b-flats are necessary.
