[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

S-C2; A-C4; T-C4; B-F4. Slightly paraphrased chant (App. 4) is assigned to S with brief migrations to A (mm. 12-21 and 59-64) and T (mm. 64-9). Lengthy duos are characteristic of the antiphon: “Salve regina misericordia” (S/A, mm. 1-9); “advocata nostra” (S/A, mm. 47-51); “oculos ad nos converte” (S/A, mm. 61-9); “O clemens” (S/A, mm. 98-103); and “illos tuos misericordes” in A, “eya ergo advocata nostras” in B (A/B, mm. 51-60. Within full-voiced sections a S/T axis serves as the structure for a layered texture. The T, frequently cast in long note values, may be a borrowed melody of unknown origin. A series of 1st-inversion chords accompany “O pia” (mm. 104-8). The 1.p. in triple mensuration contrasts with duple mensuration of 2.p. The word” mater is omitted from verse one but “semper is added in verse nine: “virgo semper Maria. Amen.” Final d.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
