Two contrasting choirs. Chr. I: C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Range, F-d’’. Chr. II: C-C3; A-C4; T-C4; B-F4. Range, F-a’ Textural phrases defined by antiphonal treatment, rhythmic gestures and tonal goals. The two initial independent verses (“Salve…” and “Vita…”) separated by silence are followed by overlapping antiphonal or tutti segments. Some verses are antiphonally divided into half verses (e.g., verses 4 and 5, “Ad te suspiramus…” and “Eia ergo…”). Tutti sections include: v. 2, “vita…salve” mm. 7-11; v. 6, “Et Jesum…tui” mm. 33-9; and v. 9, “O dulcis…” mm 46-51. Chromaticism coupled with slower rhythmic gestures (breves and semibreves) emphasize the acclamations “O clemens” (D, c, g, D) and “O pia”. Choirs are harmonically independent except at points where they overlap (e.g., mm. 24, 27, 32-3 and 46. Declamatory style with syllabic text setting. Final g, b♭ signature.
