[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATBX

C-G2; A-C2; Q-C3; T-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, c-g’’. “Salve” motto (App. 4) in semibreves introduces T & C surrounded by contrasting countersubject (A & Q); the motto introduces the second verse, “vita,” (B) with abbreviated statements in T, Q, A, & C (mm. 10-4). Plainsong also underscores “ad te clamamus” (Q, C, T, mm. 17-20) and the beginning of the 2nd and 3rd partes: “eya,” T and “Et Jesum,” A, B, & T. Except for brief homorhythmic segments (e.g., “exsules filii, mm. 22-4 and “in hac lacrimarum,” mm. 35-7, an imitative, polyphonic texture prevails in this well-crafted antiphon setting. Final g, b♭ signature; e-flats included in source.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
