Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SSSAAATTTBBB

Three contrasting choirs. Chr. I: C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Range, G-c’’. Chr. II: C-C3; A-C4; T-C4; B-F4. Range, D-a’. Chr. III: C-C1; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4. Range, d-d’’. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases or segments are delineated through antiphonal treatment; overlapping phrases overwhelmingly dominate except for the silences before (minum) and after (semibreve) “eya…converte,” the centerpiece of Salve regina. Asola adeptly explores contrasting colors of choirs or choir combinations; three choirs combine for final phrase, “O dulcis virgo Maria” (mm.70-7). Antiphony involves justaposed statements in Chrs. II and I stated a fifth higher (“fructum ventris tui,” mm. 46-50) or a fourth higher in Chrs. I and III (“O dulcis virgo,” mm. 62-5); contrasting musical material characterizes antiphonal treatment for the remainder of the antiphon. Cross-relationships (e.g., g♯/g and c♯/c) between contiguous choirs accentuates color contrasts. Homophony and syllabic textual setting prevails. Final d; b-flats included in A 2581 and editorially required.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
