Anchieta set all odd-numbered verses polyphonically, in contrast with most Spanish composers who normally divide verse 6, “Et Jesum…” into two parts, the first in polyphony and the second, beginning with “nobis…” in chant, and consider the three acclamations (verses 7-9) as a polyphonic entity. A variant[1] of the Spanish version of Salve regina usually rendered as breves in A appears at the beginning of selected textual phrases (e.g., “vita dulcedo” and “et spes nostra”). Although imitative procedures play a limited role in the antiphon, a few notable instances can be cited: “lacrimarum” (mm. 91-6) and “fructum ventris” (mm. 125-42). The three lower voices introduce “Et Jesum” (mm. 107-13), a segment that is restated a fifth higher for all voices (mm. 113-17). In a primarily melismatic setting text underlay is given limited attention. Final d; to complement chant 4.p. has final a.
