[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SSSAAATTTBBB

Three equal choirs. S-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Entire range, D-e’’. Except for “salve” motto in S of each choir (mm. 1-6), no further evidence of chant. Following these singular passages, the primary structural technique involves overlapping antiphonal responses. Textual phrases (“ad te clamamus”) or subphrases (e.g., “ad te,” m. 30) introduce specific verses. The initial (“Eja ergo advocata nostra”) and concluding words (“ad nos converte”) of verse 5, the centerpiece of Salve regina, are assigned to tutti as is “Et Jesum benedictum fructum ventris tui” and verse 9, “O dulcis virgo Maria”; approximately a third of the anthem is performed by the tutti. A declamatory text setting in homorhythmic style prevails. Final d.

[2] Et Jesum

Polyphonic ensemble SSSAAATTTBBB

Description

Attributed to Claudius Goudimel in Trésor Musical III

Although the attribution to Alcari is clear in Rome BN 117-21, Santini’s attribution to ‘Godmell’ (Claude Goudimel?) is puzzling. Not aware of Alcari’s authorship of this Salve regina, Lesure calls the work “a forgery, due to nineteenth-century enthusiasm for his [Goudimel’s] personality. (Lesure, 1954, p. 248).

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
