C [I]-G2; C II-C1; T-C3. High clefs. Entire range, f-g’’. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases are articulated through contrasting motivic material within an imitative, contrapuntal fabric as well as cadential preparation. To emphasize the final textual phrase, “O dulcis Maria” is restated four times (mm. 58-63) and that in turn is repeated with an extension of the cadence (mm. 63-69). The appeal, “Et Jesus…” is poignantly expressed with harmonic progression g-c. Principal cadences on g and D with strong root progressions affirm tonal implications. The word “mater” in verse one is omitted. A declamatory text setting is defined primarily by syllabic style. Final g, b♭ signature, frequent inclusion of e♭ and f♯.
