[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble STBX

S-C2; Ct-C4; T-C4; B-F4. Chant (App. 4), most complete in C and T, permeates the imitative, contrapuntal texture at beginning of textual
phrases set apart by breves and semibreves. Textual phrases are defined by contrapuntal techniques and voice groupings. The initial textual phrase “Salve regina misericordiae” consists of two lengthy duos allocated to “Salve regina” (C and T, mm. 1-9) and “misericordiae” (A and B, mm. 9-16). An imitative fabric based upon chant introduces “vita dulcedo…” followed by a four-voice continuous texture of interlocking phrases. Supported by chant in B and in homorhythmic style (breves) “Et Jesus” markedly contrasts with surrounding material; there follows a layered structure comprised of an inverted canon based on chant in breves (T and B) supporting two rhythmically active voices (S and Ct) for “benedictum…tui.” The words “mater” in verse one and “virgo” in verse nine are omitted. A melismatic text setting prevails. Final d, b♭ signature in B and in T and B for “nobis…ostende.”

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

Vita, dulcedo et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus exsules filii Hevae.

Ad te suspiramus gementes et flentes in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra, illos tuos misericordes oculos ad nos converte.

Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui, nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
