Regina celi

Polyphonic ensemble AB

[B]-F3; [A]-C3. Each voice is marked “Canon: Sequere me in diatesseron.” A (comes) follows B (dux) at the distance of five semibreves; canonic voices (C and T) follow respective voices (A and B) a 4th higher at the distance of one semibreve. Chant (App. 3) introduces each of the four textual phrases, as well as the words “porta” in line 2 and “sicut dixit” in line 3, cast as semibreves (“Quia quem” as minums) in both canons; the first two plainsong pitches associated with “porta” are separated from the subsequent five pitches by a semibreve rest. A continuous texture of overlapping phrases prevails. In contrast with the dominant presence of semibreves in the 4th line, “Ora…” the inclusion of semiminums accelerates the drive to the cadence in the final “alleluia” (mm. 50-71). Final F, b♭ signature.
