[1] Regina celi

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-C4; A-C4; T-C4; B-F4. Voci pari. Entire range, F-f’. Considerable voice crossing of two voices. “Regina celi,” an introduction (mm. 1-6) in homorhythmic style, includes chant (App. 3) as a cantus firmus (T). For the remainder of the motet, chant and associated textual phrases, but particularly specific words (e.g., “laetare” and “portare”), are significantly emphasized. The first eight pitches of chant concurrent with “laetare” appear in overlapping statements (B, T, B; mm. 6-16) primarily set apart in semibreves with a contrasting motive consisting of minums and semiminums in upper voices; in a similar manner, the first “portare” melisma is presented in successive statements (mm. 33-44). Chant distinguishes textual phrases “quia…meruisti,” “resurrexit…dixit” and “ora…nobis.” Declamatory text setting prevails. Final F, b♭ signature.
