Polyphonic ensemble SAATB

C-C1; A I-C3; A II-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Textual phrases are delineated through inclusion of chant (App. 3), contrasting motivic materials, cadential patterns, and repetition that conveys symmetry. To introduce “regina caeli,” chant, first presented in C in breves and semibreves and simultaneously in A II in diminution, is imitated at the interval of the lower fourth and distance of three breves; a supporting contrapuntal voice (T) is also restated at the lower fourth (B). Sections devoted to “laetare” and “alleluia” include new motives that permeate the texture and conclude with cadences on F. Chant associated with the second textual phrase “quia quem…” appears in T with an imitative entry in B at the lower fourth with contrasting motives in various voices. An “alleluia” section (mm. 32-43) consisting of motives unrelated to chant cadences in C: to complement the “alleluia” of the pars 2, the identical 12-measure segment is repeated (mm. 75-86) but with an added four-measure coda to cadence in F. In contrast with the pars 1 both textual phrases of pars 2 are introduced by motives (“resurrexit” and “ora pro nobis,” respectively) that permeate all voices. Text declamation prevails. Final F, b♭ signature. See RC213 for relationships with this setting.
