Type

Scores

Regina celi

Polyphonic ensemble STX

S-C1; T-C4; Ct-C4. “Regina celi” intonation in S with corona over each pitch. Transposed a fifth higher, an ornamented chant (App. 3) in S unites with T and Ct in a contrapuntal fabric of equal voices. Duo passages (e.g., S and T, mm. 9-14; S and Ct, mm. 65-73 and S and T, mm. 73-81) and triple mensuration for the concluding textual phrase “ora…alleluia” contrast with the prevailing three-voice texture and duple mensuration. Three texted voices favor melismatic text setting. Melodic underthird cadences as well as double-leading tone cadences prevail. Final C.

Description

Charles Hamm does not hesitate to attribute this piece to Power because “of the way in which it fits so neatly into his development.” (Power, 1969, p. XV).
