[1] Regina celi letare

Polyphonic ensemble SATBX

C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; Q-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-f’’. Chant serves as a segmented cantus firmus (T) with entrances in m. 11 of pars 1 and m. 8 of pars 2. Transposition at the interval of the upper fifth is unique to each cantus firmus segment of pars 2 except the final “alleluia”: “resurrexit…dixit,” mm. 59-77; “alleluia,” mm. 81-91; and “ora…Deum,” mm. 93-108. In each of the segments, the segment stated at pitch of the borrowed plainsong is cast in breves, whereas note values are halved (semibreves) for the transposed segments. Chant also introduces the four textual phrases within an imitative texture. For the initial statement of “regina celi…alleluia” (C), plainsong is pitched on f’ (mm. 3-11) followed by a statement transposed a fifth higher (mm. 11-30); both statements are primarily in breves and semibreves. Voices surrounding the cantus firmus contrast with rhythmic values (minums and semiminums) and melismas related to chant melismas (“letare, “portare” and “alleluia” sections). Final F, b♭ signature.
