[1] Regina caeli

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

Two equal choirs: C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F3. Entire range, B♭-d’’. Chant (App. 3), corresponding with the four textual phrases, appears as semibreves for the first three phrases and minums with “ora…Deum” in an imitative texture. Paired imitation introduces “quia quem meruisti” (mm. 27-34). The first two textual phrases are, respectively, assigned to Choir I and Choir II. In pars 3 “resurrexit…dixit” is presented in Choir I (mm. 52-9) followed by an overlapping varied statement in Choir II (mm. 58-65). Antiphonal treatment of “alleluia” with increasingly shorter statements, supported by seven repetitions of a four-note motive (B and A, mm. 65-77), culminates in a tutti. The compressed presentation of “ora…Deum” in minums first in Choir I followed by a varied response for Choir II concludes with a lengthy “alleluia” (15 mm.) based on the chant melisma; the final tutti concurs with a change to triple mensuration. Choirs are harmonically independent. Final F, b♭ signature.
