[1] Regina caeli

Polyphonic ensemble SSTTBB

S I-C1; S II-C1; T I-C4; T II-C4; B I-F4; B II-F4. Following an anticipatory statement of chant (App. 3) at the beginning of each pars (“regina celi” and “resurrexit,” respectively) in S I, a canon at the interval of the upper fifth at the distance of two breves in 1.p. and one breve in 2.p. between T I and A embodies the chant both unaltered and at times embellished and disposed in repeated textual/chant segments separated by rests of a minum or extending to the length of two breves; semibreves and breves dominate the notation of chant. Influence of chant upon non-canonic voices is limited to “sicut dixit” and “ora pro.” Countermelodies and other new material permeate the imitative texture. Except for initial measures of each pars, the antiphon is scored for full voices. Final F, b♭ signature.

[2] Resurrexit

Polyphonic ensemble SSTTBB

Description

See Festa’s Regina caeli (Renaissance composers infrequently created works for seven voices; Festa’s Regina caeli was mostly likely composed to commemorate the Seven Dolours of the BVM) and Lassus’s Regina caeli (Of the 24 Marian antiphon credited to Lassus, this is the only setting for seven voices. Seven-voiced settings of the Marian antiphons are unusual and may represent the BVM and perfection. Willem Elders, Studien zur Symbolik in der Musik der alten Niederländer. (Bilthoven: A. B. Creyghton, 1968), 108-20).
