Regina coeli

Polyphonic ensemble SATBX

C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; Q-C4; B-F4. No evidence of chant. Brief imitative passages introduce the four textual statements including subsequent “alleluias;” rhythmic imitation often prevails over imitation of intervallic structure. A full voice contrapuntal texture defines more than four fifths of the antiphon. Within a declamatory text setting syllabic style dominates; melismatic style is associated with “alleluia” (mm. 47-50) that follows “resurrexit…dixit.” The independent “alleluia” sections do not share motive material. Note cross relationship (f and f♯) in T and Q (m. 7) but also the expressive harmonic progression associated with”ora pro nobis deum” (mm 61-2): a, D, g, A, D. Final G.

The Trope:

Alle Domine nate matris Deus alme nobis confer praestaque vivere:
Quam [quoniam] te decet laus honor O Domine qui de morte surgebas rex pie:
Fac nos tecum surgere, alleluia.
