Scores

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBB

Two equal choirs. C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Chant (App. 3), associated with initial text of phrases 1 (“regina,” Chr. I, mm. 1-4 and Chr. II, mm. 6-8) and 3 (“resurrexit,” 38-43) permeates the imitative texture; initial chant of phrase 2 appears only in B (“quia,” Chr. II, m. 22, Chr. I, mm. 26-7). Except for the consistent overlap of phrases for the duration of a minum of semibreve, the entire complement of 8 voices occurs but twice: Choir I, “Deum, alleluia,” coupled with Choir II, “ora pro nobis Deum,” mm. 57-9; and a final “alleluia,” mm. 61-4. Textual phrases, or specific words (“laetare,” “ora pro nobis” a2d “alleluia”) are articulated through antiphonal procedures and contrasting polyphonic and homophonic textures. Textual phrases (e.g., “quia…portare”) consist of 5-6 mm. of polyphony with an antiphonal response of equal length but contrasting material; on the other hand, short homorhythmic gestures treated antiphonally are characteristic of “alleluia” segments as well as specific words (e.g., “laetare, mm. 17-19) and may involve repetition (e.g., 32-4). With the text, “Deum” (mm. 57-9) Chr. I is harmonically dependent upon Chr. II. A syllabic text setting primarily involves minums and semiminums. Final F, b♭ signature.
