[1] Quia quem meruisti

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

D-G2; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Between April 4 and July 4, 1574, a set of 6 alternatim settings of Regina caeli were entered into Chorbuch III (AachS 3). The odd-numbered lines carry plainsong.[1] The length of pars 1 of the 6 settings ranges from 12-22 measures, pars 2, 13-17 mm. RC127 (15 mm.) and RC131 (17 mm.) have partes of equal length. Chant quotations, primarily cast as semibreves and breves, introduce respectives partes of each setting with initial plainsong pitches associated with “quia quem” (1.p.) and “ora pro nobis” (2.p.) within an imitative, polyphonic texture. “Alleluia” sections consist of melodic/rhythmic motives primarily of minums and semiminums lacking references to chant. Final F, b♭ signature.

1. Chant associated with “regina caeli” is intact; however, only the initial pitches of the “laetare” melisma (b♭, a, g) and principal pitches of “alleluia” (b♭, a, g, f) are included. Plainsong of the third line begins with “c’” instead of b♭ and the four pitches concurrent with “alleluia” (g, a, b♭, c’) differ from 16th-c. antiphonaries (App. 3).
