[1] Regina caeli laetare

Polyphonic ensemble SSATTB

C I-G2; C II-G2; A-C2; T I-C3; T II-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, G-a’’. C voices within the range f’-a’’ include imitative (mm. 1-3, 11-13 and 46-7) and parallel (mm. 43-6) passages. Chant (App. 3) transposed a fourth lower, and presented in B as continuous semibreves, replicates pitch content (omitting melismas) and range of the model except for the penultimate pitch in each pars where Lassus inserts G to support a dominant chord with a corona. The cantus firmus is notated in square black chant notation.[1] Within a dense contrapuntal texture brief references to chant occur at the beginning of “quia,” “resurrexit” and “ora.” A declamatory text setting prevails defined by syllabic style with brief melismas. Final C.

1. Lassus’s Salve regina (SR145) treats chant in a similar manner.

[2] Resurrexit
