[1] Regina caeli

Polyphonic ensemble SSATB

DI-G2; D II-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-g’’. Chant (App. 3), transposed up a fourth, is relegated to the T for the first textual phrase “regina…laetare” and the third phrase “resurrexit…dixit,” but to the A for “quia…meruisti,” the 2.p. A lengthy point of imitation based upon chant defines the fourth textual phrase “ora…Deum. “Alleluia” sections consist of new material. Isaac arranges his work within a spatial imitative, contrapuntal context that emphasizes the higher register (two discant voices, f’-g’’ and A, f-c’’) with varying voice groups. For the 2.p. three upper voices (D I and II, A) initiate the text “quia meruisti” (mm. 31-42) after which the B and T, respectively, restate the A and D I (mm. 42-52); to conclude the phrase Isaac adds the two discantus voices (mm. 50-53), a repetition of mm. 42-45. Declamatory style prevails. Final C.
