Regina coeli

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBBXX

Two equal choirs. C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4[1]; Bc-F4. Bc is a basso seguente. Chant, primarily in semibreves, introduces “Regina caeli laetare” (Chrs. I & II, C, mm. 1-6). Textual phrases are differentiated by texture, rhythmic gestures and antiphonal techniques. Structure of the antiphon suggests greater significance extended to the third and fourth textual lines. Whereas lines 1 (“regina…alleluia”) and 2 (“quia…alleluia”) comprise 10 and 8 measures, respectively, lines 3 (“resurrexit…alleluia”) and 4 (“ora…alleluia”) include 6 and 15 measures followed by a second statement of the two textual phrases with an additional 21 measures though somewhat varied. “Quem…alleluia” emerges from and continues the previous homorhythmic texture of minums (mm. 9-17); a homorhythmic texture also defines “resurrexit…alleluia” (mm. 18-25), but with rhythmic gestures of semiminums. “Ora pro nobis Deum” returns to the character and style of “quem…alleluia.” The eight-measure “alleluia” segment that concludes line 4 is in homophonic/homorhythmic style, the first four measures in antiphony and the remaining four for eight voices; these two “alleluia” sections (mm. 31-38 and 52-9) contain the same musical material. A coda for eight independent voice concludes the antiphon. Final F, b♭ signature.

1. Ink corrosion in T and B partbooks of Chr. II impedes accurate transcription of Regina coeli.
