Regina caeli

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

[S]-C1; [A]-C3; [T]-C4; [B]-C5. Chant (App. 3) plays a fundamental role in the antiphon. Within an imitative, contrapuntal texture each textual phrase, including “alleluia” sections following the second and fourth phrases, introduces chant in semibreves. Cadences clearly define the conclusion of phrases; a series of triplets in the B form a bridge between the first and second textual phrases. The final “alleluia,” (mm. 55-83) primarily based upon chant, constitutes a third of the antiphon. Textual setting exhibits syllabic style at beginning of textual phrases with considerable melismatic treatment of the remainder of the setting. Final F, b♭ signature.
