[1] Regina coeli

Polyphonic ensemble SATBXX

C-C1; Sx-C2; A-C3; Q-C4; T-C4; B-F4. The structural core of the antiphon involves a notated canon at the upper fifth (In dyapenthe intensum) between Q (dux) and Sx (comes) at the distance of 3 breves; dux enters in m. 10 of 1.p. and m. 8 of 2.p. Chant (App. 3) forms the content of the canon cast in breves and semibreves (e.g., “regina coeli laetare,” mm. 10-7, and “alleluia,” mm. 27-30 and 97-100) or paraphrased motives (e.g., “alleluia,” mm. 122-8); abbreviated melismas associated with “laetare,” and “portare” are reduced to principal pitches. Plainsong also permeates the imitative texture at beginning of textual phrases (“regina,” “quia,” “resurrexit” and “ora”) as well as specific words (e.g., “sicut dixit”). To complement the repeated statement within the final “alleluia,” the full texture is restated (mm. 122-31 equals 131-8). A transparent polyphonic texture reflects a mosaic of plainsong motives and countersubjects; only the final three measures constitute a full voice texture. Final F, b♭ signature.
