[1] Regina caeli

Polyphonic ensemble SAATB

S-C1; A I-C3; A II-C2; T I-C4; B-F4. Considerable voice crossing of four inner voices characterizes the antiphon. Anticipatory statements accompanying textual phrases introduce chant (App. 3) assigned to canon at the lower fifth at the distance of four breves between A II and [T II]; canonic voices paraphrase and abbreviate melismas associated with “letare,” “porta” and the final “alleluia.” Plainsong permeates the polyphonic texture throughout both partes. Extended “alleluia” sections conclude each pars (1.p., mm. 35-52 and 2.p., mm. 85-111). Final F, b♭ signature.
