[1] Regina caeli

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Chant (App. 3), cast in breves and semibreves, introduces each of the four textual phrases within an imitative, polyphonic texture: “regina caeli,” mm. 1-6; “quia quem,” mm. 26-31; “resurrexit,” mm. 68-73; and “ora pro nobis,” mm. 84-90. Plainsong motives also permeate the texture (e.g., “laetare,” mm. 6-14; “alleluia,” mm. 14-21; and “meruisti,” mm. 31-44 in 1.p.). An additional unifying features involve passages in consecutive 6ths (e.g., C/T, “meruisti,” mm. 31-3) and 10ths (“laetare,” C/B, mm. 6-8). Similar harmonic and melodic elements prepare the conclusion of each pars: harmonic progression F-c (1.p., mm. 61-2; 2.p., mm. 113-4) and consecutive 10ths, C/B (1.p., mm. 65-6; 2.p., mm. 115-6). Occasional passages for three upper voices contrast with prevailing full voice texture. Final F, b♭ signature.
