Scores

[1] Ave regina celorum

Polyphonic ensemble STX

[C]-C1; [T]-C4; [Ct]-C4. Entire range, c-c’’. No influence of chant. A treble-dominated texture with two equal supporting voices and rhythmic gestures complement C. A syllabic setting of the Pre-Tridentine text (“Ave” instead of “Gaude” for beginning of 2.p.) prevails. Although C is only texted voice, the two lower voices could also accommodate the text. The antiphon is reminiscent of the medieval conductus. Triple mensuration. Final d.

[2] Ave virgo gloriosa

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
