AC153 Ave regina celorum 3 vv

Scores

Ave regina celorum

Polyphonic ensemble STX

S-C2; T-C3; Ct-F3. No evidence of chant. Within a contrapuntal texture imitation initiates two textual phrases: “ave…celorum” and “ex qua mundo.” That most textual/ musical phrases begin text declamation simultaneously in all voices and conclude with a chord capped by a corona clarifies the structure. The Pre-Tridentine text concludes with “Amen.” Final G.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.

***

Pre-Tridentine version:

Ave regina coelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum,

Et pro nobis Christum exora.
