Scores

Polyphonic ensemble SATBXX

C-C1; Sx-C2; A-C3; T-C4; Q-F3; B-F4. Ranges of Q, c-c’ & B, F-f. Chant associated with “regina celorum” introduces T (“Ave,” mm. 1-4); plainsong related to “salve” is paired with “Ave regina” (C, mm. 4-8), both quotations cast as semibreves. Textual phrases are primarily distinguished through antiphonal effects and contrast of texture. For example, the initial “ave” is scored for T,Q,B followed by the three upper voices, C, Sx, A; similarly, “ave” associated with the second line of stanza 1 contrasts four voices within a homorhythmic texture of autonomous voices (C,Sx,A,Q vs. A,T,Q,B, mm. 10-17). A highly imitative texture characterizes “gaude gloriosa” wherein a rhythmic motive (dotted minum, semiminum, two minums followed by two semibreves) permeates the texture (mm. 31-7). The antiphon concludes with a full voice texture of independent voices accompanying the final line “et pro nobis…exora” that comprises a quarter of the composition. Final F, b♭ signature.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
