Scores

[1] Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

S-C2; A-C4; T-F3; B-F4. Chant (App. 2) complements each textual phrase with rhythmic gestures comparable to other voices and often permeates the texture within an imitative, contrapuntal fabric comprised of overlapping textual phrases. To emphasize “ave” Willaert has composed an eleven-measure independent introductory passage. The Pre-Tridentine text in declamatory style includes melismas that emphasize salutations “ave,” “salve,” “gaude” and “vale.” Final F, b♭ signature.

[2] Gaude gloriosa

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.

***

Pre-Tridentine version:

Ave regina coelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum,
Salve radix sancta

Et pro nobis Christum exora.
