Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBB

Two equal choirs. C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. No evidence of chant; however, the chant-like motive in AC135 also appears in C and B for both “ave regina” and “ave domina” within an imitative contrapuntal texture. Additionally, the initial two measures for “salve” are similar to those of AC135. Whereas the first two phrases “ave…coelorum” and “ave…angelorum” are relegated to choirs I and II, respectively, thereafter, alternation of choral responses usually involves shorter phrases culminating with tutti passages. Overlapping phrases with repetition of material occur with the following textual phrases: “lux est orta” (3 statements), “gaude gloriosa” (2 statements) and “et pro nobis” (3 statements). Triple mensuration and homorhythmic style employed for “gaude gloriosa”[1] and “et pro nobis” contrast with surrounding material. The Pre-Tridentine text is in declamatory style. In V1435 (1600) an organ part was added to duplicate choir I. Final F, b♭ signature.

1. To emphasize textual/musical structure and complement trochaic prosody of “gaude…speciosa,” triple mensuration and homophony defines Ave regina caelorum settings by G. Aichinger (AC002 & AC003), F. Anerio (AC006), G. Bassano (AC016 & AC017), A. Gabrieli (AC047), R. de Lassus (AC072), G. de Macque (AC076), G. P. Palestrina (AC099), P. Philip (AC106), E. Saÿve (AC121), F. Soriano (AC123), F. Stivori (AC126), T. Victoria (AC136), Anon (AC170), Anon (AC184) and F. Anerio (AC232).

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
