Scores

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBBXX

Two equal choirs. C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4; Bc-F4. The Bc, a basso seguente, is not essential for the performance of this antiphon. Entire range, F-d’’. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases and words (e.g., “ave” and “salve”) are distinguished through antiphonal treatment, contrast of texture, rhythmnic gestures and mensuration. Triple mensuration defines “Vale valde decora,” a section that also carries the designation F. (Fora.)[1] in Bc. Homophony with syllabic setting of the Pre-Tridentine text prevails. Final F, b♭ signature.

1. F. or Fora. (forastieri), indicated in Bc, refers to outside or ”foreign,” paid musicians (i.e., musicians not part of the musical establishment of the specific church or cathedral) who performed the solo passages (concertino). The terminology was common in Northern Italy in the late 16th century and onward. Frederick Hammond, “Performance in San Marco: A Picture and Two Puzzles,” Early Music, No. 2, 2012, p. 261.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
