Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

S-C1; A-C3; T-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire, range, A-e’’. Within an imitative, contrapuntal texture, chant (App. 2) permeates the texture for the initial “ave,” “speciosa” and “vale”; for other textual segments chant is relegated, for example, to A (“regina coelorum” and “ave domina”) or S (“salve radix” and “et pro nobis”) or it may be omitted (“exora”). Clarity of structure is created through contrast of texture, mensuration, and the presence or absence of chant. Lengthy passages for two voices (e.g., “lux…omnes”) contrast with the surrounding material for four voices. “Et pro nobis…Christum” in homorhythmic style with coronas for each chord is preceded and followed by sections in contrapuntal style and triple mensuration. Of particular interest is the setting of the word “speciosa” that consists of 36 mm, one-fifth of the entire motet; though it begins with the plainsong melody in breves imitated in all voices, chant is soon replaced by freely composed material that gradually gathers intensity with smaller note values and an ostinato in the B (drive to the cadence). Except for “et pro…Christum” in homorhythmic and syllabic styles the Pre-Tridentine text reflects a highly melismatic setting. Final C.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
