Scores

Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

S-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Entire range, c-g’’. Chant intonation (S) on c’’ for “ave” with initial whole step. No evidence of chant in motet. The structure of the work is delineated through thematic material, texture and cadential patterns. Within an imitative, contrapuntal texture Porta employs motives consisting of a descending interval of a fifth followed by an ascending octave (“salve”) and an ascending triad (“gaude”) that emphasize the tonal qualities in this setting. Three-voice textures are relegated to “regina coelorum” and “gaude…speciosa.” The Pre-Tridentine text with inclusion of “salve radix et porta” instead of “salve radix sancta” is set in declamatory style. Final C.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
