Ave regina celorum

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBB

Two equal choirs: C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, A-g’’. A Bc (basso seguente) as well as duplication of the highest voice was added in the 2nd edition (P 1976). Like his 5 vv setting, Philips includes chant (App. 2) in the two “ave” exclamations wherein the melody permeates the texture; some of the musical material of the first “ave” is borrowed verbatim from the 5 vv setting and rearranged for the second “ave.” Beginning with “salve radix,” antiphonal responses consist of 2-4 measure phrases as identical statements (“salve radix” and “salve porta”), related (“ex qua…orta”) or expanded (“et pro…exora”). In homophonic texture and triple mensuration “gaude virgo gloriosa”[1] contrasts with surrounding material. “Et pro…exora” involves considerable text repetition, expansion of musical materials, brief excursions into third-related harmonies (A and E) within the context of strong harmonic progressions emphasizing C and constituting a third of the antiphon. Final C.

1. To emphasize textual/musical structure and complement trochaic prosody of “gaude…speciosa,” triple mensuration and homophony defines Ave regina caelorum settings by G. Aichinger (AC002 & AC003), F. Anerio (AC006), G. Bassano (AC016 & AC017), A. Gabrieli (AC047), R. de Lassus (AC072), G. de Macque (AC076), G. P. Palestrina (AC099), P. Philip (AC106), E. Saÿve (AC121), F. Soriano (AC123), F. Stivori (AC126), T. Victoria (AC136), Anon (AC170), Anon (AC184) and F. Anerio (AC232).

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
