Ave regina celorum

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBB

Two equal choirs. [S]-C1; [A]-C3; [T]-C4; [B]-F4. Entire range, F-d’’. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases primarily defined through antiphonal treatment; almost half of this succinct setting (43 mm.) is devoted to tutti: “ave…angelorum,” mm. 5-9; “gaude…speciosa,” mm. 18-26; and “Christum exora,” mm. 35-43. Antiphony for “salve radix sancta” involves 4-voice choirs consisting of selected voices from both choirs: Chr. I, A and Chr. II, S, A, B, mm. 9-11; and Chr. I, T, B and Chr. II, A, T, mm. 11-14. Homophony with prevailing homorhythmic style defines the antiphon. A declamatory setting primarily in syllabic style of Pre-Tridentine text prevails. Final F; b♭ signature

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
