[1] Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SSSA

C1-C1; C II-C1; C III-C1; A-C3. Voci pari. Range, f-d’’. Chant (App. 2) figures prominently appearing unchanged at the beginning of each phrase and permeating the entire texture, especially the upper three voices through imitative procedures employed in this motet. To complement the chant, with minor differences, the music for “ave…coelorum” is restated for “ave…angelorum.”[1] Except for the melisma for “ave” the Pre-Tridentine text is in declamatory style with appropriate melismas. Final F, b♭ signature.

1. Identical or similar statements of the complete polyphonic texture congruent with “Ave, regina caelorum” and “Ave, Domino angelorum” define Ave regina caelorum settings by B. Appenzeller (AC009), A. De Silva (AC035), H. Isaac (AC061), J. Mantua (AC062), B. Klingenstein (AC064), G. P. Palestrina (AC095) and Anon (AC186).

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
