Scores

Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SSATB

C I-G2; C II-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4. Two C voices share similar range. High clefs. Entire range, c-g’’. No evidence of chant. A combination of homophony, imitative polyphony (particularly “gaude”) and independent voices provide textural variety. Contrasting motivic material also differentiates textual phrases. The Pre-Tridentine text is set in a prevailing contrapuntal style with occasional melismas (“gaude”). The “salve” motto (la-sol-la-re) from Salve regina chant is prominently presented in the B with “salve radix.” Lasso’s harmonic progressions effectively express the text. Final a.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
