Scores

Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble STB

C-C3; T-C4; B-F4. No evidence of chant. Within an imitative, polyphonic fabric, Lasso clearly delineates the textual/musical structure with cadential patterns and motivic material. The final phrase “et pro…exora” constitutes almost a third of the entire antiphon. The setting illustrates both declamatory and melismatic styles. The Pre-Tridentine text is altered by substituting “vale, stirps sancta, per quam mundi” for “salve radix sancta ex qua mundi” “vale gloriosa” for “gaude gloriosa” and “salve valde decora” for “vale, valde decora;” the “salve” motto (la-sol-la-re) from Salve regina chant is included in each voice with “salve radix.” Final G.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
