Scores

[1] Ave regina celorum

Polyphonic ensemble STX

C-C1; T-C3; Ct-C3. No evidence of chant. C and T form structural axis within polyphonic texture of three-voice sections. A succession ` of duos constitutes a significant portion of 2.p.: C/T, “Gaude…speciosa,” 13 mm.; Ct/T [“Vale”], 5 mm.; C/T, “valde,” 5 mm.; and Ct/T, [“decora”] 4 mm. Triple mensuration defines the antiphon. C carries the Pre-Tridentine text with a combination of extended melismatic (e.g., “mundo,” “orta,” “gaude” and “exora”) and syllabic text settings; text incipit “Ave regina” identifies T and Ct. Final g, b♭ signature for T and Ct.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
