Scores

[1] Ave regina caelorum

Polyphonic ensemble STX

[S]-C1; Ct-C3; T-C3. “Ave” intonation (S). Paraphrased chant (App. 2), pitched on g’, appears in S within a contrapuntal texture with S and T as the axis voices. The Ct becomes an equal participant for the two-voice “salve…sancta” and the interlude between “speciosa” and “vale.” A melismatic setting of Pre-Tridentine text serves the S, the only texted voice. The first section is in triple mensuration, “gaude…” in duple mensuration and the concluding textual segment “et pro…exora” in triple mensuration. Final G.

[2] Gaude gloriosa

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
