[1] Ave regina caelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATBB

[S]-C2; [A]-C4; [T]-C4; [B I]-F3; [B II]-F4. Range of voices: E♭-c’’. Not infrequent crossing of voices occurs in the lower voices. Chant (App. 2) is most evident in the T and S but also appears in other voices at the beginning of textual phrases. Imitative, contrapuntal texture prevails. To complement the repetition of music within the chant for “ave…angelorum,” De Silva repeats the entire texture of mm. 1-21 from mm. 21-35/42.[1] In two instances material is restated an octave higher: “salve” (mm. 43-46) and “valde decora” (mm. 124-131). For “semper Christum exora” the entire material is repeated (mm. 142-52 repeated in mm. 152-62). Melismatic writing prevails in setting of Pre-Tridentine text. Triple mensuration is employed for “et pro…exora.” Final F, b♭ signature.

1. Identical or similar statements of the complete polyphonic texture congruent with “Ave, regina caelorum” and “Ave, Domino angelorum” define Ave regina caelorum settings by B. Appenzeller (AC009), A. De Silva (AC035), H. Isaac (AC061), J. Mantua (AC062), B. Klingenstein (AC064), G. P. Palestrina (AC095) and Anon (AC186).

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
