Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATTB

[S]-G2; [A]-C2; [T I]-C3; [T II]-C3; [B]-F3. High clefs. Entire range, c-f’’. No evidence of chant. Structural clarity results through the introduction of homorhythmic style for most textual phrases: “ave…coelorum” (2 statements); “ave…angelorum” (2 statements); “salve…sancta,” “gaude gloriosa” and “vale…decora.” A few individual voices include the salutatory statements “salve…” and “gaude…” prior to the tutti statements. “Vale…decora” begins with antiphony between 3 upper and 3 lower voices prior to the tutti. A third of the setting is devoted to the final phrase “et pro…exora;” though the motet concludes in homorhythmic style, the preceding material consists of a contrapuntal texture including melodic and/or rhythmic imitation of a motive attached to “Christum exora.” The Pre-Tridentine text is used. Final F, b♭ signature.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
