Scores

Ave regina caelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Entire range, d-d’’. No evidence of chant. An imitative, polyphonic texture with overlapping phrases characterizes all textual phrases except “Salve radix et porta,”[1] with homophonic/homorhythmic texture, preceded by a semibreve rest and “Salve” cast as a breve (mm. 9-13). The fourth line of each stanza (“Ex qua…orta” and “Et pro…exora”) is restated but with new musical material. A syllabic text setting defines this brief antiphon (39 mm.). Final g, b♭ signature.

1. Balbi adheres to the Pre-Tridentine text except to conflate the Tridentine phrase “Salve radix, salve porta;” the Pre-Tridentine text reads “salve radix sancta.”

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
